Reading and Phonics
"Children learn to read, so they can read to learn"
At St John’s Primary School we believe that English is a fundamental life skill. The study of English develops children’s ability to listen, speak, read and write for a wide range of purposes. Children are enabled to express themselves creatively and imaginatively as they become enthusiastic and critical readers of stories, poetry and drama, as well as of non-fiction and media texts. Children gain an understanding of how language works by looking at its patterns, structures and origins. Children use their knowledge, skills and understanding in speaking and writing across a range of different situations.
All of our writing is driven through a love and exploration of high quality texts. Texts are read and re-read, and children learn how to become authors themselves, publishing their work.
We believe fundamentally that children are wired to thrive on repetition, and that this repetition feeds their confidence and ability to succeed.
